Summer Wednesdays in La Torre: the market, the traffic and a call-out

On Wednesday evenings in July and August the market takes over Avenida de la Costa Blanca. If you are locked out of a house or a car nearby, a few details make the difference between a quick visit and a long one.

Torre de la Horadada is the beach side of the municipality, and in summer it fills up. One of the busiest moments of the week is the Wednesday evening market: in July and August, roughly from four in the afternoon until ten at night, more than three hundred stalls line Avenida de la Costa Blanca. (Times and days come from a market listings site and can change; the town hall has the final word.)

It is a good evening out. It is also when a lot of people realise the keys are not in their pocket.

Locked out of the house nearby

The streets around the avenue are full of parked cars and people on foot, and some are closed to traffic while the market is on. When you ring:

  • Say that you are near the market. It changes how the van approaches.
  • Name a corner a vehicle can reach, rather than the house itself if your street is taken up by stalls. You can walk the last hundred metres together.
  • Send a pin on WhatsApp. It cuts out the guesswork about which side street you mean.
  • Say which side of the Río Seco you are on if you are staying towards Mil Palmeras: the dry riverbed runs between the two.

Locked out of the car

If the keys are inside the car and the car is parked somewhere in the market crowd, say where exactly, and whether you can stay with it. Have the documents ready if they are not locked inside with the keys. How a locked car is opened, and what is never done with car keys.

The other markets

The town has its own weekly market on Friday mornings on Avenida Camilo José Cela, and a Sunday market on Avenida Josefina Artigot. El Mojón has a market on Tuesday mornings in July and August. All of them fill the streets around them for a few hours. Giving an address in El Mojón, where the regional boundary runs through the streets.

A habit worth having

Most front doors latch the moment they are pulled shut, and a latched door is a locked door if the keys are inside. Before you leave for the evening, take the keys out of the door and put them in your pocket before you close it. For the terrace door you leave open to air the place, sand can stop it locking at all.

Rather talk it through?

Ring, or send a photo of the lock and a pin on WhatsApp.
