# Sand in the track: when a beach-side terrace slider stops locking

A terrace slider a short walk from the beach at Mil Palmeras or La Torre collects sand and salt until the hook lock stops catching. What you can safely clean yourself, and when it needs someone with the right parts.

The coast of Pilar de la Horadada runs for four kilometres, with sandy beaches such as Mil Palmeras and Las Higuericas. Many of the apartments and bungalows behind them have an aluminium sliding door onto a terrace, and those doors tend to share the same slow decline.

## How it happens

1. **Sand gets in.** Wind off the beach, feet coming in from the terrace, a towel shaken by the door. Fine sand settles in the bottom track.
2. **The rollers start to grind.** The door needs more push, then both hands.
3. **The leaf drops.** Rollers wear unevenly under the grit, and the door sits a few millimetres lower than it did.
4. **The lock stops catching.** Most sliders lock with a hook that swings up into a keep on the frame. When the leaf has dropped, the hook misses. The handle goes down, but the door is not locked.

Salt air speeds up every step, working on the rollers, the hook and its spring.

## What you can safely do

- **Vacuum the bottom track** with a narrow nozzle, then wipe it with a damp cloth.
- **Clear the drainage slots** at the foot of the outer frame, so rain and sand can get out.
- **Use a dry silicone spray** on the hook and on the rollers you can reach. Not oil and not grease: they hold sand and make a paste.
- **Check whether it locks** after cleaning. If it does, you are done until next season.

## Better not attempted

- **Do not lift the leaf off its rail.** Large sliders are heavy and can drop out of the top track without warning.
- **Do not force a handle** that will not go down. Something inside is misaligned or broken, and forcing it turns an adjustment into a new part.
- **Do not leave it unlocked “for now”** if the house is going to stand empty. A slider whose hook misses its keep can be slid open from outside.

## When it needs a visit

If the door still grinds after cleaning, or locks only when you lift it, the rollers need adjusting or replacing and the hook needs setting again. That is planned work, booked for a day that suits.

In a brand-new home, a slider that does not run or lock properly from the start is for the builder to fix: [put it on the handover list](https://locksmithpilardelahoradada.es/blog/handover-day-doors-and-locks-to-test/). And if you are staying in La Torre in summer, [here is why market evenings and an unlocked terrace are a bad mix](https://locksmithpilardelahoradada.es/blog/summer-wednesdays-in-la-torre/).

Cleaned it and it still will not lock?

Rollers, hook locks and alignment are looked at together. A short video of the door helps before the visit.
